Because About Medical can open the IQMS database to its clients, there is always up-to-the-minute tracking and current location on inventory.
System streamlines the return and disposition of used medical devices
When a medical device reaches the end of its lifecycle, About Medical steps in to handle the returns process, the decontamination of the device, and the overall destruction and recycling of the equipment. Medical device manufacturers don’t have to worry about disposing of biohazardous materials or auditing inventory; About Medical’s services do it all, including the provision of a certificate of destruction delivered back to the manufacturer.
Capturing that information, however, requires a lot of real-time tracking. Specifically, About Medical needs a “proof of receipt” for transactions to and from the client. And they need it in a digital format, as pen and paper—and even document scanners—can be unreliable for keeping tabs on About Medical’s hundreds of thousands of devices.
More importantly, the company has made a commitment to its customers that it will never lose a device. For that reason, About Medical executives decided to find a way to provide a highly accurate, transparent, and efficient means of collecting and storing the data and transaction histories related to each device the company handles.
The solution, implemented last year, combines the IQMS EnterpriseIQ ERP database with Wi-Fi-connected mobile devices and phones running the Microsoft Windows Mobile OS. The technology captures signatures of the recipient and delivery personnel when transferring archived devices to the client for review. The application provides a way for a live transaction to interact directly with the IQMS database, thereby creating complete transparency to the client regarding the location of the device.
The company is also able to provide daily updates on device locations upon request from the client. Because About Medical can open the IQMS database to its clients, there is always up-to-the-minute tracking and current location on inventory.
Before this application, signature capture was done using a standalone program and was downloaded to the system later in the day. But a move to a real-time signature capture capability has increased the quality of About Medical’s services and has earned the company recognition as a PM100 winner in the Customer Mastery category.
“We are very excited to be a PM100 award winner this year,” said About Medical CEO Shawn O’Keefe. “We have always considered About Medical to be an innovative company that develops and utilizes cutting-edge technology. This award validates our vision.”
